Vee Bee Consistometer Test | Workability of Concrete Test
Vee Bee Consistometer Test :
The workability of concrete mainly depends upon stability, mobility, compactibility, place-ability & finish ability of concrete.
Each test has their importance, there is no unique test to measure the workability of concrete in total.
Vee bee consistometer test determines the mobility as well as some extent of compactibility of concrete.
Vee bee consistometer Significance:
Vee bee consistometer test is derived after the developer V Bahrmer of Sweden and it is covered under the IS : 119 – 1959.
In this test, we measure the concrete change from one definite shape to another definite shape by conducting vibration.
This effort is known as Remoulding effort and it can be measured in ‘t’ secs. We also called as Vee bee Secs.
The time taken by the concrete to undergo complete remoulding is determined as a measure of workability of concrete,
The Vee Bee test is usually performed on dry concrete & these test are not suitable for very wet concrete.
Concrete having slump value more than 50 mm remoulds quicker, where measuring the time is not possible.
Apparatus of Vee bee consistometer test:
The Vee bee test apparatus consists of a machine, tamping rod of dia 20mm as well as having 500 mm length, Cylindrical Container, Trowels & Stopwatch.
Vee bee Test machine :
These machine having a vibrating table which is fixed on an elastic supports.
The vibrator is operated electrically. The length & width of a vibrating table are 380mm & 260mm.
The vibrating table surface of having an Cylindrical container in which the height is attached using wing nuts.
Along with that, there is Slump cone as well as cylindrical jar are placed.
The cylindrical container is screwed to the vibrating table through wingnuts.
The slump cone having a height of 300 mm is open on both sides, also it has a dia of 200mm at the bottom & 100mm at the top.
To perform the test, the slump cone is inserted into the cylindrical container.
The whole arrangement is mounted on a sturdy base. The bottom base having a swivel arm holder where the swivel arm is fixed to the funnel and guide sleeve.
A graduated rod which has a scale is used to measure the workability of the sample.
A graduated rod is fixed to the swivel arm through the guide sleeve. The graduated rod has the provision for screwing the transparent disc.
Procedure for Vee bee Consistometer:
1. Our first step, was to Insert the Slump cone in the attached cylindrical container.
2. Now, we have to Fill the concrete sample in the cone in four layers; each layer should be 1/4 th of the height of slump cone & tamped with tamping rod for 25 strokes each.
3. After tamping the top layer, we should have to struck off the concrete with a trowel making the cone correctly filled.
4. After filling the concrete in the slump cone, place a transparent glass disc attached to a swivel arm. Which is moved & placed on the top surface of the concrete.
5. In these step, we have to Note the reading from the graduated scale as an “initial reading”
6. Also, then remove the cone slowly in the vertical direction as well as to wait until the concrete settles in the new position.
7. In these step, we have to Again move the swivel arm. Also to place it on the lowered concrete for the final reading. Note it as “final reading”.
8. Atlast, we should have to switch on the vibrator & start the stopwatch.
9. We should remember that the vibrations are continued until the concrete is wholly remoulded.
10. The Surfaces become horizontal, also the whole concrete surface adheres uniformly to the transparent disc.
11. We have to recoed the time required for complete remoulding in seconds.
12. Also, we should have to Note the time taken by concrete to become horizontal (remoulding) as Vee bee Secs.
13. The consistency of concrete is measured as Vee bee Secs.
